Stoltenberg announces new NATO aid package for Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announces additional air defense systems and ammunition for Ukraine in an aid package to be revealed before the Washington summit
He said this in an interview with CBS.
Stoltenberg confirmed that the Alliance is significantly stepping up its assistance to Ukraine, saying that all NATO members have agreed to new training programs for the Ukrainian military and long-term aid commitments.
Jens Stoltenberg mentioned that he expects new announcements on strengthening air defense and increasing ammunition supply before next week's summit.
According to him, new initiatives to provide security assistance to Ukraine will be announced at the summit, including the establishment of a logistics center in Germany to store equipment for training the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
"This is a big and important deliverable from the summit to ensure a more robust framework for how we support Ukraine," the Secretary General emphasized.
Stoltenberg noted that NATO's main task is to ensure Ukraine's victory, which is a prerequisite for the country's future membership in the Alliance.
“We need the last thing, just peace. And the only way to get there is to convince President Putin that he will not win on the battlefield,” he said.
The Secretary General added that this requires long-term military assistance to Ukraine to ensure its advantage on the battlefield.
“He has to sit down and accept a solution where Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent nation in Europe,” Stoltenberg summarized.
- U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink said that during the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, the allies will raise the issue of strengthening Ukraine's air defense and integrating the country into the Alliance.
