Canada approves $587 million in military aid for Ukraine
The House of Commons in Canada approves $764 million CAD (approximately $587 million) in military aid for Ukraine
Ukrinform reported the information.
These funds are included in a larger budget document, approval of which will allow the government to allocate an additional 21 billion Canadian dollars for various purposes, including national defense.
Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair stated that the money would be used for "ammunition, training, and other essential means for Ukrainians to achieve victory."
The document also includes 400 million Canadian dollars (about $307 million) for financial aid to Ukraine, drawn from a special International Monetary Fund (IMF) account.
In addition, Parliament approved 45 million Canadian dollars (about $35 million) for "humanitarian demining and strengthening cyber resilience in Ukraine."
The outlet notes that the opposition Conservative Party, which is attempting to force the government to resign, voted against the approval of the additional expenditures. The increase in spending was approved by the House of Commons on the last legally allowed day. For this decision to take effect, it still needs to be voted on by the Senate of Canada, which is expected soon.
- Canada banned 324 types of firearms. Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc stated that the government is in negotiations with Ukraine regarding the potential transfer of this weaponry to support the country in its fight against Russia.
