Canada bans 324 types of weapons from use: they are to be transferred to Ukraine
Canada has banned 324 types of firearms and is discussing their transfer to Ukraine to support its fight against Russia
The Associated Press reports.
According to the report, this step is a continuation of the ban that Canada introduced in May 2020, when 1,500 makes and models of firearms were banned, and by November this year, their number increased to more than 2,000 due to the discovery of new types.
“This means these firearms can no longer be used,” LeBlanc said.
In addition, Defense Secretary Bill Blair noted that the Ukrainian government has expressed interest in certain types of weapons for military use.
“Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory,” Blair added.
The federal government is also working with provinces and police on a buyback plan for banned firearms from private owners. While mass shootings are rare in Canada, these measures coincide with the 35th anniversary of the tragic 1989 Polytechnique Montréal shooting, where 14 women were killed.
The leader of the opposition Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, criticized the government's actions, calling them a “stunt” by the government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which attacks “licensed & law-abiding hunters and sport shooters.”
