Zelenskyy presses security guarantees, Trump calls for ceasefire in Paris talks on Ukraine war
During a meeting in Paris on December 7 with newly appointed U.S. leader Donald Trump, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Trump focused on advocating for an immediate ceasefire
Reuters reported the information, citing its own sources.
Zelenskyy used his meeting with Trump to explain Ukraine's need for security guarantees in any peace negotiations to end the war with Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Donald Trump, who spoke for 35 minutes without advisors, did not discuss specific peace details, but Trump reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to quickly end the war.
"The meeting offered some early clues as to how negotiations on ending the conflict might play out, although the process that would involve Russian President Vladimir Putin is fraught with difficulty and the role of the United States as yet unclear," the report states.
According to one source, Trump was friendly, respectful, and open, and seemed inclined to listen.
According to sources in the office of the Ukrainian president, the meeting in Paris emphasized that peace requires guarantees and that a mere ceasefire is not enough, as Putin could violate it again, as he has done before.
The report states that the overall friendly nature of Trump's direct communication with Zelenskyy differed from some of his public statements about the Ukrainian leader during the election campaign, including when he referred to him as "the greatest salesman in history" for asking for and receiving billions of dollars in U.S. military aid.
Meanwhile, Macron and Zelenskyy "were on the same wavelength" during the meeting in Paris, but were careful not to appear as if they were "cornering Trump," said one official.
