Rutte supports Trump's statements on further sanctions against Russia
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed full support for U.S. President Donald Trump's pressure campaign on Russia: he has threatened the Kremlin with further economic sanctions
He said this in an interview with Bloomberg on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Rutte, further economic sanctions against Russia are Trump's "correct strategy."
“That’s the way forward,” he said. “Trump starting that debate is good, he will aways do it in his own way,” said Rutte.
Earlier, the new American president said that he would quickly end the war in Ukraine, but did not specify how. On January 23, Trump will speak at the forum in Davos via video link.
Rutte refused to discuss the details of any agreement to stop hostilities, but emphasized that the best option is for Kyiv to be as strong as possible.
At the same time, the NATO Secretary General made a connection between Putin's war and China, portraying Beijing as part of an "axis" that includes North Korea, Iran, and Russia.
“This is not a conflict between Russia and Ukraine or Russia and Europe. It’s a geopolitical issue because of North Korea, China, Iran, and that is why we need to get a good deal,” he said. “A good deal means you will not have Putin high-fiving with Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping and the mullahs in Iran.”
- On January 22, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to make a deal to end the war in Ukraine. In case of refusal, he threatened Russia with high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on all exports to the United States.
