Denmark supplies Ukraine with 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer
Denmark quietly supplied Ukraine with 2S1 Gvozdika howitzers, alongside Caesars, F-16s, Leopard 1 tanks, and more, contributing €8.7B in military aid while expanding support with new artillery orders
Defense Express reported the information.
Denmark has sent Ukraine not only all 19 of its Caesar self-propelled howitzers and restored M109 units, but also unexpectedly provided Soviet-made 122mm 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers, with no prior announcement.
The information came to light when the Danish government quietly updated the list of weapons and military equipment sent to Ukraine. Unlike other governments, the Danes did not publicize their contributions. Danish security analyst Hans Tino Hansen was the one to notice the update.
The list itself does not mention the number of these self-propelled howitzers or where Denmark found them. It is unlikely to determine their origin independently, as the 2S1 Gvozdika is used by around 20-30 countries, with about 10 more belonging to former operators.
The appearance of the 2S1 Gvozdika in the list can only be traced publicly. Specifically, the Wayback Machine service shows that the mention of the 2S1 Gvozdika appeared in the Danish government’s list between November 28 and December 12, 2024.
Despite its limited resources, Denmark is a strong weapons donor to Ukraine. After providing its existing artillery, Denmark ordered additional Caesar howitzers and, in cooperation with Germany and Norway, 16 Slovak Zuzana-2. When facing EU production limitations, Denmark began ordering Ukrainian Bohdana howitzers, initiating the "Danish model."
In addition to artillery, Denmark has provided Ukraine with F-16s, over 140 Leopard 1 tanks, and around 50 M113s. Overall, the country has contributed 64.8 billion Danish kroner (8.7 billion euros) to Ukraine's military support fund.
