Xi Jinping unlikely to push for end to Ukraine war amid U.S.-China rivalry, expert says
Professor Igor Eisenberg of Manhattan University believes Chinese leader Xi Jinping would seek to end the Russian-Ukrainian war if it harmed China's economic interests
He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
"I am not sure that Xi Jinping currently wants to end the war in Ukraine. He would want this if China's economic interests were suffering, but that is not the case today. Xi Jinping certainly does not want Russia to use non-conventional weapons. He opposed this when Joe Biden asked him about it back in 2022. It is unlikely that Xi Jinping has an interest in ending the Russian-Ukrainian war. If such an interest existed, China would act differently. Today, Beijing pursues a completely different policy, one that certainly does not bring us closer to ending the war," Eisenberg explained.
The professor emphasized that the confrontation between the United States and China will continue, which is why communication between the leaders of the two countries is very important.
"It is very good that contacts between the American president and the Chinese leader are being maintained. This does not depend on the specific individual holding the position of U.S. president. It is better to have such communication than not. China is the world's second-largest economy and, in fact, has the world's second-largest military, which is developing, unlike Russia's. Therefore, the U.S.-China rivalry will continue, and it is better for the leaders of these two countries to maintain communication," he added.
