Ukraine confirms execution of 109 POWs by Russia in 2024 — Ombudsman
Ukraine has officially confirmed that since the beginning of 2024, Russian soldiers have executed 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war
Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, reported this on United News telemarathon.
“We are managing to officially record more violations of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war, executions, and, unfortunately, cynical point-blank executions. In 2024 alone, it was officially confirmed that Russians executed 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war. If the total number recorded in previous years was 177, you can see that much less was documented compared to 2024,” he said.
Lubinets emphasized that Russia frequently violates the rights of captured Ukrainian soldiers, pointing out the lack of an effective response from the international community.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t publicly reveal and showcase these examples of blatant violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions when we managed to document them - we are doing this,” the Ombudsman added.
- Dmytro Lubinets met with Russian Ombudswoman Tatiana Moskalkova and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. He hopes the results of this meeting will be evident by the New Year.
