Zelenskyy's interview with Fridman: U.S. studies actions of both sides
The purpose of the conversation: to find "common ground" for possible future negotiations in a format involving Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy. This intention was partly evident in certain questions
1. Content: A significant portion of the interview, both questions and answers—and rightly so—was devoted to the topic of security guarantees. Importantly, this was addressed in the correct context: as a necessary component between freezing the war and moving toward a sustainable peace. This is indeed crucial—for us.
"The cessation of active hostilities is only the starting point for moving toward peace. However, the conditions and whether they include a long-term vision for security will determine the possibility of achieving lasting and just peace."
2. Audience: The initiator of the interview, Lex Fridman, announced upfront that he plans to record interviews with Putin and then return to Kyiv, aiming, possibly, to help identify "common ground" for future negotiations in the Trump–Putin–Zelenskyy format. This was partially reflected in some of the questions. Volodymyr Zelenskyy primarily addressed the Republican audience, seeking to convey details of Ukraine's position, emphasizing that any meeting must begin with a discussion between Donald Trump and himself. He also stressed that Europe’s stance must also be taken into account. In other words, he highlighted the necessity of a unified position between Ukraine and the West before any potential negotiations with Russia.
Overall, the interview reflects (in terms of American attention) the sentiment expressed by Keith Kellogg following Russia's massive attack at Christmas in late 2024: "The United States is studying the actions of both sides."
As for the use of obscene language, I do not support its use in public interviews by high-ranking officials. However, in the Ukrainian segment of social media, there has been an excessive focus on this element of the entire interview.
