Russia's economy loses up to 1.7 million able-bodied citizens due to war with Ukraine
As a result of the war against Ukraine, the Russian economy has lost between 1.5 and 1.7 million able-bodied citizens
Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service reports.
"In 2025, the Russian labor market is expected to see a slowdown in wage growth, unemployment remaining at current levels, and an intensification of labor shortages. The reason is the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Due to the war, the Russian economy has already lost between 1.5 and 1.7 million able-bodied citizens," the report states.
The long-term outlook is also negative: by 2045, the Russian labor market is expected to shrink by 7–10 million people from the current 76 million employed citizens.
"Deterioration in the labor market exacerbates stagflationary processes in the Russian economy, including rising inflation due to wage increases, declining production levels, and the bankruptcy of several enterprises," the Foreign Intelligence Service notes.
In addition, according to Ukrainian intelligence, the shortage of able-bodied population is one of the factors preventing the Russian authorities from announcing a new wave of mobilization.
- Invading Russian army lost 1,550 servicemen and several equipment and weaponry units over the day of the war against Ukraine. And during the Ukrainian military operation in the Kursk region - more than 38,000 people, of whom about 15,000 were killed.
