Russia may agree to use $300 billion in frozen assets as part of peace deal
Russia may agree to the use of its frozen assets, totaling $300 billion, for Ukraine’s reconstruction as part of a peace agreement but will insist that part of the funds be spent on the temporarily occupied territories
Reuters reported the information, citing sources.
The news agency recalls that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and its allies banned financial transactions with the Russian Central Bank and Ministry of Finance in 2022, freezing $300–350 billion of Russian assets.
Currently, negotiations between Moscow and Washington are at a very early stage. However, Russia is considering the possibility of using a significant portion of the frozen assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction as part of a potential peace deal.
According to the World Bank’s estimates for 2024, Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery will cost $486 billion.
“The idea that Russia may agree to using the frozen money to help rebuild Ukraine has not been previously reported and may give an insight into what Russia is willing to compromise on as Moscow and Washington seek to end the war, at a time when Trump is pushing for U.S. access to Ukrainian minerals to repay Washington’s support,” Reuters writes.
- On February 21, it was reported that representatives from the U.S. and Russia secretly met in Switzerland for informal discussions about the war in Ukraine.
