Hungary blames Ukraine for rising European gas prices after transit halt
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó accused Ukraine of attempting to increase pressure on the European Union's economy by halting the transit of Russian gas
He wrote about this on his Facebook page.
Szijjártó stated that the suspension of transit led to a 20% rise in natural gas prices in Europe. He emphasized that this decision has put the European economy, particularly Central Europe, in a difficult position.
"Today, even the most fanatic people of Brussels cannot argue, because they do not know that the competitiveness of the European Union has recently deteriorated tremendously, one of the main reasons for this is that natural gas prices in Europe have become much higher than in the case of our competitors," he stressed.
According to him, the primary reasons for rising gas prices in Europe include "measures to artificially reducing the amount of natural gas, such as the elimination of certain natural gas sources through sanctions or politics, and the closure of certain transport routes."
The head of Hungary's foreign ministry expressed his belief that Ukraine is to blame for the increase in gas prices.
"Meanwhile Ukraine is trying to join the EU as a candidate, it has repeatedly put the European economy in a difficult situation with its latest decision," Szijjártó said.
- On the morning of January 1, 2025, Ukraine halted the transportation of Russian natural gas through its gas transmission system.
