Ukraine halts Russian gas transit on January 1
On the morning of January 1, Ukraine suspended the transportation of Russian natural gas through its own gas transportation system
Ukraine's Ministry of Energy announced this.
It is noted that transit was stopped at 07:00 a.m. on January 1, 2025. Ukraine has informed its international partners in accordance with the established procedure.
"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to refuse Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today," said Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.
As a result, since January 1, Ukraine's gas transportation system has been operating in a mode without Russian gas transit.
The Ministry of Energy noted that it had prepared the gas transmission system infrastructure in advance to operate in zero transit mode and ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
- On December 21, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that on January 1, Ukraine would stop transiting Russian gas through its territory.
