Ukrainian army gains new ground in Russiaʼs Kursk region - military expert Zgurets
Defense Express CEO Serhiy Zgurets says that the Ukrainian Defense Forces have advanced northwest of Sudzha and are strengthening their positions in newly secured areas
He mentioned this on Espreso TV.
"The fighting in the Kursk region continues to draw international attention. Notably, Anthony Blinken highlighted the importance of this part of the frontline in the context of potential negotiations with Russia. According to Blinken, the situation in the Kursk region plays a crucial role in shaping future diplomatic actions. Currently, our forces appear to be securing their positions in new areas they have advanced to northwest of Sudzha," Zgurets mentioned.
As of January 6, the director of Defense Express reported that the Russian army suffered heavy losses in the fighting in the Kursk region, with 38,000 soldiers killed or wounded, including 15,000 dead. With an additional 50,000 Russian and North Korean troops, the total force in this area is around 90,000. However, according to the Ukrainian General Staff, 38,000 of them are already out of action. This is a significant concentration of Russian forces now tied up by the fighting in the Kursk region.
Serhiy Zgurets said: “Russia will try to increase pressure on Ukrainian units conducting counterattacks. Therefore, this area will remain one of the most difficult and important.”
The military expert also mentioned that Ukrainian armored personnel carriers are effectively taking out Russian infantry. Foreign experts mention the high level of technology integration within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, especially in electronic warfare.
"The Ukrainian army is using long-range systems to block Russian reserves from reaching the Kursk region. This means that the Ukrainian Armed Forces' capabilities are being integrated into counterattack efforts in the region," Zgurets said.
- Since the start of the Kursk operation, the Russian military has suffered 38,000 casualties, including both killed and wounded. Additionally, Ukrainian forces have taken 860 soldiers prisoner.
