Putin miscalculates: how missile terror gives us an increase in anti-missile defense
Between Putin's birthday and our Feast of the Intercession, the occupying Russian forces have played all their trump cards — missile terrorism, mobilization, and nuclear strikes. Putin tried to scare the Ukrainians, but finally angered the European Union, PACE, and NATO. And in the end, although it is a little late, they give air defense systems to Ukraine, Maryna Danyliuk-Yarmolaeva writes
The morning of October 10 for many became a flashback to the tragic dawn of February 24. Missiles and Iranian-Chinese Shahid drones (Chinese components were found there, and we can talk about it - Ed.) became a test for our thermal power plants, Shevchenko University, and simply human fortune. Dozens of Ukrainians never made it to work. They were killed by Putin and his perverted Russia. Okhmatdyt has lost one talented doctor who saved children with cancer. The boy in Mykolaiv could not stand being under the rubble for several hours. There were more obituaries. This is the price that the damn sky above us becomes more protected.
We have been asking for the protection of the sky since the first days of the war in February. And a serious breakthrough happened only now. When Putin did not blow out the candles on the cake on his own anniversary, but broke people's destinies.
As of now, it is already known that Germany is delivering the promised IRIS-T. In order to finally provide them, Olaf Scholz had to experience the shame of "moles" in the government department that dealt with the cyber security of local politicians. Arno Schoenbom introduced Russian IT workers and Kremlin corruption to important projects — and that's why Moscow could see all the correspondence of German government officials online.
Further, in parallel with the attacks on our cities, on October 11, an oil leak occurred on one of the two threads of the western section of the oil pipeline 70 kilometers from Płock. Oil goes to Germany through this section. In the German publication Spiegel, this was directly related to Putin's statement about "just turn off the faucet on Nord Stream-2." Separately, the Germans were alerted by sabotage on the railway in the north of the country.
German security expert Peter Neumann admits that the Russian Federation could potentially be behind the sabotage, in particular because the attackers knew well what they needed to damage. "It is beneficial for Russia to sow panic in Europe and send signals that it can very visibly paralyze normal everyday life. Disrupting these communications requires specific knowledge. It is very likely that these were not "amateurs", as it looks like the work of professionals." That is, for the first time, the Germans thought that the threats "to go to Berlin" and "to terrorize the Reichstag with a nuclear bomb" from the Russian Federation were no joke. And it is necessary to draw conclusions. Anton Hofreiter, the head of the Bundestag Committee on European Affairs, spoke very clearly for the first time:
"We cannot rule out that Russia is also behind the attack on the railway. Perhaps both were warning shots, because we support Ukraine."
Therefore, Germany stepped up its promises and finally there is a chance to start "a new era of air defense".
The US is giving NASAMS, France is giving Crotale, and Spain is giving HAWK 23. The last one is generally very interesting and completely new for us - the Spanish will give us 4 units. A few more will arrive later.
The Improved Hawk Phase III includes the AN/MPQ-50 surveillance radar with a target detection range of up to 100 km, which is responsible for medium and higher altitudes, the AN/MPQ-62 low-altitude target detection radar, and the AN/MPQ-61 target illumination radar. The complex also includes a command post and support vehicles. As the military say, this is not a very new, but working machine that is well suited for knocking down "mopeds".
The Netherlands transfers missiles to air defense and anti-missile systems worth EUR 15 million.
The UK Minister of Defense and our friend Ben Wallace announced the transfer of AMRAAM missiles to Ukraine for NASAMS air defense systems.
"Russia's latest indiscriminate strikes against civilian areas in Ukraine require further support for those seeking to defend their country. That's why today I authorized the delivery of AMRAAM anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine," Wallace said on October 13.
Poland handed over Soviet anti-aircraft systems to us. From the messages of the Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi, it can be understood that some of them have already promptly arrived and are in formation.
"In two days, according to the calculations of the anti-aircraft missile division, 9 out of 11 Shahed-136 drones were shot down. This is the result of high-quality training of our anti-aircraft fighters, which was conducted by our Polish comrades," Zaluzhnyi wrote."
He immediately noted that Poland provides complexes from which Ukrainians use Soviet missiles to shoot down Iranian drones launched by the Russian forces.
From open sources it is possible to understand the volumes of help to close the sky, which the Poles give us. Part of their sky is now closed by the British.
"I am pleased to announce that we will continue the current deployment of our medium-range air defense assets ... for the next period to ensure that as Poland continues to provide logistical support to Ukraine, it does so safely," Ben Wallace told reporters.
Therefore, trying to frighten the Ukrainians, to return them to the fear of a new February 24 — Putin only united our Western partners so that they would more actively give us new shells for air defense. All Russian forces have been doing for the past few days has been hysterical venting with minimal results. Ukrainians were worried about their lives, but their composure, firmness, and understanding that they had to go to shelter was very clear and confident. No one rushed to storm Zelenskyy's office with a request to simply stop shooting and organize a fake peace. This is the price of "growing up".
For several days, missile terrorism disrupted the usual lifestyle of a wartime Ukrainian. But some of the rockets did not reach, some hit the sidewalks. These were expensive and high-precision missiles - Iskanders and Kinzhals, the same ones that were being prepared for the attack on Washington. They still have them in their arsenal, but there are not enough of them for Russia to effectively destroy our lives.
Even if the Russian Federation hits thermal power plants and substations here and there - and our phenomenal electricians and utility workers will need time to recover - we will return to the 90s for one winter. The current generation, born in the late 1980s, which pulls the logistics of war on their backs, cannot be intimidated by this. Because everyone has experience of lessons under the hood, several months of candlelight evenings, as well as sleeping in tracksuits under duvets. We can survive with cold water from the tap and fan power outages. It is unpleasant. But somewhere in the south or near Bakhmut in the trenches under the rain and without electricity, it is much harder for someone. And without our shock fist, the unity of the front and the rear, there will be nothing that we desire most - victory and punishment for the occupiers.
