The plane crashed around 12:00 on Tuesday, March 12. During takeoff from the Severny airfield, the engine caught fire. After making a circle, the crew tried to make an emergency landing on the runway, but failed, Brief writes. The IL-76 plane that crashed near Ivanovo was based in Tver.
The plane was conducting a training flight, Baza said. According to the publication, it took off from the Severny airfield and stayed in the air for several minutes. During a turn, the plane's engine caught fire.
According to preliminary data, the pilot tried to reach the airfield, but when he realized that he could not do so, he began to fly the plane away from residential buildings. The plane then crashed in a forested area near a cemetery.
The Russian Defense Ministry officially confirmed the downing of the plane with 15 people on board.
"A military Il-76 crashed during takeoff in the Ivanovo region. There were eight crew members and seven passengers on board. The crash was caused by a fire in one of the engines during takeoff," RIA Novosti quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.
Military officials report that no one survived the crash.
