The letter was posted on Twitter by Labor Party member Chris Bryant.
The MPs emphasized that, given the likelihood of a new large-scale Russian offensive against Ukraine, the latter needs to immediately build up its capabilities, and this should be done with Western armored vehicles.
"We understand the historical reasons for the reluctance to provide German and German-made tanks. However, we would urge you, at this moment of urgency, to reconsider your position and allow Leopard 2 battle tanks - both German-owned and German-made - to be provided to Ukraine in the next few days," the text of the appeal reads.
- The Polish Foreign Ministry said that Germany will find itself in international isolation if it does not change its decision to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
- During the eighth meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense in Ramstein on January 20, the provision of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine was not agreed upon.
- German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier supported Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cautious approach to providing tanks to Ukraine, explaining that it could escalate the conflict.
