Clooney Foundation files three reports on Russian crimes in Ukraine with German prosecutors
The George and Amal Clooney Foundation for Justice has submitted three reports on Russian crimes in Ukraine to the German prosecutor's office
They shared it on their website.
These three reports target high and mid-level Russian commanders suspected of involvement in these crimes.
The first case involves the indiscriminate attack on a resort in the Odesa region in the summer of 2022. Russian Tu-22 bombers launched Kh-22 supersonic missiles, which resulted in the deaths of 22 civilians and injuries to 40 others.
The second case focuses on Russian ground force commanders who allegedly detained, tortured and executed four individuals during the occupation of the Kharkiv region from March to September 2022. This complaint was filed jointly with the Ukrainian human rights organization Truth Hounds.
The third case involves Russian unit commanders responsible for various crimes, including executions, torture, sexual violence, looting, and other offenses during the occupation of the Kyiv region in March 2022.
Anya Neistat, Legal Director of The Docket program, stated, "Our team spent one and a half years interviewing witnesses, carrying out field work, analyzing documents, going through satellite imagery, deciding on the best legal approach, and preparing survivors and families of the victims for the process. I am now confident that the cases are strong, and that they will offer German courts a real chance to deliver justice to the survivors."
If the German authorities find the evidence against specific individuals convincing, they may initiate a criminal investigation and issue arrest warrants. This could lead to extradition requests. Arrest warrants can also be enforced internationally through Europol and Interpol systems. Additionally, the International Criminal Court (ICC) may issue arrest warrants for key suspects.
- In September, it was reported that the Federal Prosecutor's Office of Germany was investigating a crime involving Russians in the Hostomel area of the Kyiv region, specifically a shooting incident in which a German citizen was injured.
