356 more Ukrainians freed from Russian captivity in 2024 compared to 2023

Ukraine's Defence Intelligence has reported that in 2024, 1,358 Ukrainians were freed from Russian captivity. This was achieved through 11 successful prisoner exchanges

Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian intelligence service, shared that last year was challenging but effective. In 2024, 356 more people were released compared to 2023. 

Additionally, the Coordination Center began officially supporting civilian families, a Coordination Center Council was formed, and a public council is being set up. Ukraine also extended rehabilitation and support for those freed from Russian captivity, alongside other important changes.

  • As of late October 2024, Ukraine has returned the bodies of 184 people who died in Russian captivity, including 169 military personnel and 15 civilians.
