Russian Mi-28 military helicopter crashes in Voronezh region on New Year's day: 2 crew members dead
A Russian Mi-28 military helicopter crashed in the Voronezh region on the evening of January 1. The helicopter caught fire and was completely destroyed, killing both crew members. There’s speculation that the helicopter was shot down by Russian air defense
The incident was reported by Russian Telegram channels and former adviser to the mayor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko.
According to ASTRA, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. in a field in the Kamensky district of the Voronezh region.
Reports indicate there were two crew members on board, both of whom died, as confirmed by ASTRA’s sources within regional emergency services.
The crash site is located about 250 km from the front line.
Baza reports that the Mi-28 was en route from Belgorod to Buturlinovka when it went down near the village of Kovalevo in the Liskinsky district.
Petro Andriushchenko stated that pilot Daniil Kuznetsov and navigator Alexander Korolev died in the crash.
The official explanation, as reported by Russian media, points to a technical malfunction during what was allegedly an attempt to repel an attack by “unknown” drones.
However, Andriushchenko sarcastically remarked that the “real reason” was yet another “success” of Russian air defense.
- On December 12, a similar incident occurred when the main power plant of an An-72 military transport aircraft detonated at the Ostafyevo airfield in the Moscow region.
