UAVs target Russia's largest commercial seaport, Ust-Luga, in Leningrad region
On January 4, drones attempted to attack Russia's largest maritime trade port, Ust-Luga, located in the Leningrad region. This port is the second-largest in Russia, following Novorossiysk.
ASTRA reported the information.
According to sources, most of the drones in the Leningrad region were reportedly shot down over the terminal of Novatrans LLC, located within the Ust-Luga maritime trade port. Preliminary reports suggest that windows in one of the port buildings were damaged.
Earlier, the governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, claimed the downing of four drones and stated that there were no casualties or significant damage. He also mentioned that the night and morning of January 4 saw a record number of drones intercepted.
The Ust-Luga maritime trade port began operations with the opening of a coal terminal in December 2001. By the early 2020s, it had become Russia's second-largest maritime port after Novorossiysk.
Russian Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg suspends flights
On Saturday, January 4, the Russian aviation oversight service, Rosaviatsiya, announced that Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg has temporarily halted the arrival and departure of flights starting at 7:45 AM to ensure the safety of civilian aircraft, reports Reuters.
The outlet notes that although the reason for the flight suspension has not been specified, Russian airports have previously closed when there was a risk of Ukrainian drone strikes in the region.
According to Alexander Drozdenko, the governor of the northern part of the Leningrad region, which includes St. Petersburg, Russian forces shot down two drones near the Luzhskaya Bay in the Gulf of Finland.
"The airport is temporarily not accepting or dispatching flights," said a Rosaviatsiya representative. "Aircraft crews, air traffic controllers, and airport services are taking all necessary measures to ensure flight safety – this is the top priority."
- During the night of Saturday, January 4, Russian officials reported drone attacks in five regions, with explosions heard in the Smolensk region, among others.
