Ukraine's attack on Marinovka airfield could weaken Russian strike, reconnaissance capabilities - expert
Defense Express military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi stated that the night attack on August 22 targeting the Marinovka military airfield in Russia's Volgograd region shows the effectiveness of Ukraine’s long-range weapons
He shared this information on Espreso TV.
Ivan Kyrychevskyi noted, “On the night of August 22, the Marinovka airfield in Volgograd region not only saw the destruction of Su-34 aircraft, which are carriers of guided aerial bombs, but also had a warehouse of these bombs hit. This airfield is a regular base for a mixed air regiment that includes Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft. There are unverified reports suggesting that after Ukrainian anti-aircraft fighters shot down two A-50 aircraft, the Russians began using Su-24MRs, which also carry guided aerial bombs, in place of the more valuable A-50s.”
He added that while Su-24MR aircraft might seem outdated compared to drones, they remain useful to Russia.
“We can assume that the strike on the Marinovka airfield serves not only to weaken Russia’s strike capabilities but also to reduce its intelligence-gathering abilities. Additionally, it has a psychological impact, as the airfield may have been the only one where Russia had built shelters to protect against Ukrainian drones, but these shelters proved ineffective. Geographically, the airfield is closer to Kazakhstan than to the Ukrainian border, which also demonstrates the reach of our long-range weapons,” noted the Defense Express military expert.
Kyrychevskyi added that satellite images of the Marinovka airfield show that the explosions were extremely intense.
