Ukrainian forces target Marinovka airfield in Russia's Volgograd region overnight
On the night of August 22, Ukraine's Security Service, together with the Special Operations Forces, attacked the Marinovka military airfield in Russia's Volgograd region, hitting the warehouses with guided bombs and fuel
Ukrainska Pravda, Suspilne, and RBC-Ukraine reported this, citing their own sources in the special service.
Russia is actively using the Marinovka military airfield to bombard the front line in Ukraine.
"According to the source, local Russians are now saying that after the Ukrainian drone attack, their military airfield looks like footage from an apocalypse movie," the report says.
Sources say that warehouses with aerial guided bombs, ammunition, and fuel and lubricants were exploding at the airfield all night and into the morning.
"Ukraine's Security Service works with surgical precision on the airfields from which the enemy attacks Ukraine. Each such implementation reduces the Russians' air superiority and significantly limits their aviation capabilities," the source said.
The attack on the military airfield was reported by the Astra, BAZA, and Mash Telegram channels, citing their sources or local residents.
Residents of Kalach-na-Donu in the Volgograd region reported hearing explosions. Russian media speculate that drones struck the Marinovka airfield, located 20 km from the city.
Reports indicate that around 03:30 a.m., locals heard up to 12 explosions near the site. Preliminary information suggests that Russian anti-aircraft missiles intercepted at least two drones — one was destroyed a few kilometers from the airfield, while debris from the second drone fell on a nearby technical building, igniting a fire.
Russian authorities have not provided an official comment on the incident.
Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov claimed that Russian air defenses successfully repelled a UAV attack in the Marinovka area.
However, Bocharov also acknowledged that a fire broke out at a Russian Ministry of Defense facility due to the drones' crash.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that during the night, Russian air defense forces intercepted or shot down 28 UAVs:
- 13 over the Volgograd region,
- 7 over the Rostov region,
- 4 over the Belgorod region,
- 2 over the Voronezh region,
- 1 over the Bryansk region,
- 1 over the Kursk region.
Rosavia's press secretary announced that the Volgograd civilian airport has temporarily suspended all flights due to security concerns.
