Myroslava Gongadze, Head of VOA's Eastern Europe Bureau Chief, says the issue of Greenland is quite complex

She shared her opinions with Espreso TV.

"From his previous term, we see that former President Trump is highly unpredictable, yet in some ways, he is also a visionary leader," Gongadze emphasized. "He brings attention to challenging issues, one of the most complex being Greenland."

VOA's Eastern Europe Bureau Chief noted that in 2009, Denmark granted Greenland the opportunity to decide its independence. Today, Greenland not only holds the right to conduct a referendum on independence but also to declare it outright. With a population of just 50,000, Greenland has its own parliament and leadership, giving it the ability to shape its future. National elections are scheduled for the spring. Denmark has already expressed its willingness to engage in negotiations with the United States.

"The United States currently has a military base in Greenland, which has been there for a long time. This base intercepts signals about missile launches and monitors security in the region. Therefore, the issue of Greenland is quite complex. Additionally, climate change is occurring, with glaciers melting in Greenland, and more territory can be explored. Greenland also has a large variety of valuable minerals, which are of interest, particularly to the United States," noted Gongadze.

Myroslava Gongadze believes that the issue of Greenland will remain on the agenda.

"There is another important nuance that could cause some European-American disagreements. If Greenland decides to become independent, the Danish parliament must approve this independence. If Denmark refuses to do so, and the United States supports Greenland's independence, it could cause some tensions," explained VOA's Eastern Europe Bureau Chief.
