Ukraine reports most massive strike on Russian military facilities to date

Ukraine’s General Staff reported that, "On the night of January 14, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out the most massive strike on the military facilities of the occupiers at a distance of 200 to 1,100 km deep into the Russian Federation. Targets in the Bryansk, Saratov, Tula regions and the Republic of Tatarstan were hit.”

The military stated that in Engels, Saratov region, units of Ukraine’s Forces of Unmanned Systems and the HUR attacked the oil products storage base Kristal, resulting in a fire that resumed and could not be extinguished for five days before.

In the city of Seltso, Bryansk region, units of Ukraine’s Forces of Unmanned Systems, Special Operations Forces, Missile Forces, Air Force, HUR, and SBU struck a strategic facility of the Russian military-industrial complex, the Bryansk Chemical Plant. This plant produces ammunition for barrel artillery, MLRS, aviation, engineering ammunition, and components for Kh-59 cruise missiles. According to the General Staff, a secondary detonation occurred on the plant's territory, which lasted for several hours. Additionally, enemy anti-aircraft missile systems Tor and Buk were eliminated.

Units of HUR and SBU also targeted strategic facilities of the Russian military-industrial complex, including the Saratov Oil Refinery and the Kazanorgsintez plant, where fires broke out.

"The targeted and systematic work to destroy facilities that supply the Russian occupation army with ammunition, military equipment, and fuel and lubricants will continue until the Russian Federation's armed aggression against Ukraine is completely stopped," the General Staff added.

Attack on Engels

At 03:57 a.m., the governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, reported a potential drone threat and later confirmed an incident.

"Following the UAV attack, an industrial enterprise in Engels sustained damage. Emergency and operational services are working in enhanced mode," his statement read.

The Baza Telegram channel shared details about the attack's likely aftermath, reporting a severe fire.

Later, Busargin reported that Saratov and Engels had been subjected to a large-scale UAV attack, with air defense systems "eliminating a significant number of targets."

"The attack caused damage to two industrial enterprises in Saratov and Engels. Emergency services are responding at all affected locations," he added.

In the afternoon, Ukraine’s 14th separate regiment of unmanned aerial vehicles announced that, in cooperation with other components of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, it had struck the infrastructure of the Engels-2 military airfield once again.

"As a result of the damage, tanks containing rare aviation fuel for Tu-160 bombers, which Russia uses for terror against the civilian population of Ukraine, caught fire on the grounds of the Kristal oil depot," the statement read.

The military further stated that a multi-day comprehensive operation to diminish the capabilities of Russian strategic aviation has now been completed.

Fire in Kazan

According to the press service of the head of Tatarstan, a gas tank in Kazan caught fire following a drone attack. No injuries have been reported.

Simultaneously, Russian sources claim that Ukrainian drones targeted the Kazanorgsintez chemical plant in Kazan.

The Mash Telegram channel reported that only debris fell within the plant's territory. The explosion allegedly occurred nearby, with smoke visible at the debris impact site. A video of a large fire has also been shared.

The Astra Telegram channel, citing its sources, reported that following the UAV attack in Kazan, three liquefied gas fuel tanks belonging to Gazprom Liquefied Gas LLC in the Moskovsky district caught fire.

Subsequently, Tatarstan Governor Rustam Minnikhanov stated that he visited the site of the fire, which was caused by the drone attack, though he did not provide further details.

"Emergency services responded promptly to the fire. I listened to the reports, and fortunately, there were no casualties or significant damage. All the city's enterprises are operating normally," he said.

The Kazanorgsintez plant, situated on the far northern outskirts of Kazan, is known for producing polymeric materials, according to open-source information.

  • On the night of January 8, the Russian city of Engels in the Saratov region reported a drone attack. The Ukrainian defense forces hit the Russian Kristal oil depot.
  • On January 11, Governor Busargin claimed that the fire at the “industrial enterprise” had allegedly been reduced by 80%. Five days after the UAV attack, Russia announced that the open fire at the oil depot had been extinguished.
