Ukraine must be part of any decision about its future - EU top diplomat
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas believes it is not the right time for European peacekeeping missions regarding the war in Ukraine, as Russia is not interested in peace
Radio Svoboda reported the information.
According to Kaja Kallas, the European Union will be able to maintain its unity despite the growing number of governments with sympathies towards Russia.
"Despite difficult negotiations, we have managed to maintain unity. It is becoming more challenging, but I am still confident that we can represent a unified position because only then can we retain our strength," she said at a meeting with journalists in Brussels, as reported by the Hungarian service of Radio Free Europe.
Kaja Kallas emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not truly seeking peace but rather a ceasefire to regroup and rearm his forces: "We have already seen a ceasefire. The Russians never respected a ceasefire. That is why it is crucial for Europe that peace is sustainable and lasting."
She also emphasized, "No decision on Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decision on Europe without Europe."
The former Prime Minister of Estonia believes that now is not the time to talk about Europe's peacekeeping role, as Moscow is not interested in peace. Europe is more interested in peace than Russia, which mistakenly believes that time is on its side, she noted.
Ultimately, Kallas stressed that the West must increase economic pressure on Russia, as only through military support for Ukraine, economic pressure on Moscow, and isolating Russia internationally can its victory be prevented.
