Ukraine recognizes genocide of Circassian people by Russian Empire
On Thursday, January 9, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a resolution recognizing the genocide of the Circassian people carried out by the Russian Empire during the Caucasian War of 1763–1864
This was reported by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko.
The resolution was supported by 232 MPs.
"The genocide carried out by the Russian Empire during the Russo-Caucasian War (1763–1864) was accompanied by ethnic cleansing, mass killings, forced displacement, as well as the organization of hunger and epidemics," wrote Honcharenko.
The genocide of the Circassians (Adyghe) by the Russian Empire occurred during the Caucasian War of 1763–1864. As a result of military actions and resettlements, over 90% of the Circassians were driven from their historical homeland. Instead, Circassian lands were populated by other peoples.
The Russian government has yet to recognize the genocide and destruction of the Adyghe people. The official day of remembrance for the victims of the Circassian genocide is observed annually on May 21 in three republics: Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Adygea.
- In the first week of its work, the U.S. House of Representatives introduced the first bill calling for the recognition of Russia's actions in the war against Ukraine as genocide.
