No French soldiers in Ukraine tomorrow - MP Cherniev on Macron's statements
Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament's Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence Yehor Cherniev explains why the French regular army should not be expected in Ukraine tomorrow
He said this in an interview with Espreso.
When asked whether French President Emmanuel Macron's statement was a political move and whether it would have consequences in the future, the MP said: "I think it's too early to make an assessment. Indeed, President Macron has had many ideas and initiatives in recent years, and we have seen that not all of them come to practical implementation, but it is very important that such talks have begun, and that they have raised to the level of discussion this issue that was not considered a year ago: how we will send our troops to Ukraine."
Cherniev emphasises that the possible decision to provide military assistance by the French regular army will change the approach of this war.
"It's good that this discussion has started, and I'm telling you, it's still far from being implemented. Of course, Macron, among others, is using this for his own promotion both within the country and as a leader (application for leadership in Europe). Because now Germany has lost its leadership after Merkel left. Britain seems to be not really in Europe because it left the EU and has other interests. Here, Macron is trying to take the lead within Europe, including with such statements. It is very telling that some countries have responded by saying that they do not rule out this development and this kind of assistance for Ukraine. But again, let's not deceive ourselves - there will be no French soldiers in Ukraine tomorrow," summed up the Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence.
