Russian sabotage, reconnaissance groups change tactics on Ukraine's northern border
On Ukraine's northern border, Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups have changed their tactics, now using a combination of air and artillery support
Vadym Mysnyk, the spokesman for the Siversk troops grouping, said this during the United News telethon.
"Favorable conditions for the sabotage groups are found in the terrain along the northern border, and they tend to operate in difficult weather conditions. But now, their tactics have shifted. They’re using air support, UAV reconnaissance, FPV drones, and artillery. This is how the reconnaissance groups are operating now," Mysnyk explained.
He also pointed out that the Russian army may carry out distracting strikes nearby to cover the activities of the sabotage groups with the fire.
"This could either be a way to test our defenses, carry out terrorist actions against the local population on the border, or serve as a prelude to larger offensive actions. This determines the activity of the sabotage reconnaissance groups," he added.
Mysnyk noted that in 2024, one main change in Russia’s tactics was the increased use of FPV and attack drones. The use of fiber-optic drones has also risen along the border.
"Just a few months ago, they were using Shahed-type attack drones at night, but now they’re using them during the day and in the morning as well. As for artillery, they’re using mortars, which are easier to move and conceal," he said.
- On the morning of December 20, Russian reconnaissance and sabotage groups attempted to advance toward Ukraine’s Kherson.
