Russia damaged 33 cultural heritage sites in Ukraine during December
In December alone, Russian army has damaged 33 cultural heritage sites in regions including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture's press service.
The total number of damaged cultural heritage sites in Ukraine as of late December 2024 stands at 1,255.
Among these, 125 are of national significance, 1,055 of local significance, and 75 are newly identified heritage sites.
Cultural monuments in 18 regions and Kyiv suffered damage, specifically:
- Kharkiv region — 324
- Kherson region — 180
- Donetsk region — 164
- Odesa region — 137
- Chernihiv region — 65
- Kyiv region and Kyiv city — 83
- Zaporizhzhia region — 57
- Mykolaiv region — 44
- Dnipropetrovsk region — 49
- Lviv region — 60
- Sumy region — 33
- Luhansk region — 32
- Khmelnytskyi region — 10
- Poltava region — 6
- Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions — 4 each
- Kirovohrad region — 2
- Cherkasy region — 1
The exact number of damaged cultural heritage sites in temporarily occupied territories remains unknown.
The recent attack on Kyiv on January 1, 2025, damaged the building of the Ukrainian Writers' Union. The Ministry of Culture announced it would appeal to UNESCO to help establish a mechanism for preserving and protecting the architectural integrity of streets in Kyiv’s historical center, regardless of the status or ownership of the buildings.
Additionally, Russian missile strike on January 1, 2024, completely destroyed the Roman Shukhevych House-Museum in Lviv. Memorial items belonging to Shukhevych, including furniture like a table, chairs, an armchair, a piano, and a bust of the UPA general by Mykhailo Chereshniovsky, were destroyed.
