Russia calls 'elections' in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories

It is noted that September 10 will be the 'Single Election Day,' in which the temporarily occupied Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions will participate for the first time. On this day, additional 'elections' to the Russian State Duma will be held.

Russian media also note that additional 'elections' will be held in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

What is known about sham referendums in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories

On September 20, 2022, the so-called 'public councils' of the occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions decided to hold 'referendums' on the accession of these territories to the Russian Federation. Later, the decision to hold a sham referendum was announced by the 'LPR' and 'DPR' terrorist organizations.

Later, on September 30, Vladimir Putin signed 'agreements' on 'joining Russia' for the self-proclaimed 'LPR' and 'DPR' as well as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

On October 2, 2022, he submitted a bill to the State Duma to accept the LPR and DPR terrorist organizations and the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as part of the Russian Federation.The entire Zaporizhzhia region, including the territories controlled by the Ukraine, was to be “incorporated” into Russia.  Kherson region was planned to be "incorporated into the Russian Federation" along with two districts of Mykolaiv region.

Already on October 5 last year, Putin signed 'laws' on the so-called accession of four regions of Ukraine to Russia. He also appointed Denis Pushilin as 'acting head of the DPR' and Leonid Pasechnik as 'acting head of the LPR.' Volodymyr Saldo became the 'governor' of the Kherson region, and Yevgeny Balitsky was appointed the 'governor' of  the Zaporizhzhia region. 

On October 19, 2022, the Russian authorities declared martial law in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the decision. On the same day, the head of the occupation authorities of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, said that all units of the Kherson region's 'administration' were moving to the left bank of the Dnipro River.
