Putin won't be arrested if he comes to Hungary – PM Orban's chief of staff
Hungary won't arrest Vladimir Putin if he enters the country. Budapest believes that the decision to issue an arrest warrant for the Russian president will contribute to escalation
Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyas said this, Reuters reports.
Asked whether Putin would be arrested if he came to Hungary, Gulyas said that the Rome Statute was not built into the Hungarian legal system.
“We can refer to the Hungarian law and based on that we cannot arrest the Russian President,” Gulyas said.
He also said that the Hungarian government “has not formed a position” on the arrest warrant for Putin.
“These decisions are not the most fortunate as they take things towards further escalation and not towards peace, this is my personal subjective opinion,” Gulyas added.
