St. Petersburg lawmakers appeal to Russia's parliament, demand Putin is charged with treason
The St. Petersburg local lawmakers have issued a document urging the State Duma (Russia's parliament) to charge Putin of treason over the war in Ukraine.
The council of the Smolninskoye municipal entity in St. Petersburg decided to call on State Duma deputies to bring charges of treason against Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to remove him from office.
Dmitry Palyuga, deputy of the Smolninskoye municipal entity, wrote about this on Twitter.
"The decision [to send requests to State Duma deputies] was supported by the majority of the deputies present [Smolninskoye municipal entity]," Palyuga said, without specifying exactly how many deputies approved the decision.
He also presented the texts of the decision and the appeal, which they intend to send to the deputies of the State Duma. It says that during the war "young able-bodied" citizens of Russia are dying, the Russian economy is suffering, NATO is expanding to the east, and Ukraine is getting new weapons (although Putin called the "demilitarization" of the country one of the goals of the invasion).
