Over 5,000 sq km cleared of mines in Ukraine since full-scale war began
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, a total of 5,308 square kilometers of Ukraine’s territory have been surveyed and cleared of mines
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported this information on September 20, 2024.
In 2024 alone, non-technical surveys have been conducted in 59 Ukrainian territorial communities, identifying 235 square kilometers as potentially contaminated with explosives.
The ministry notes that humanitarian demining is currently underway at 282 sites, covering a total area of 17.5 square kilometers. 88 of these sites, encompassing 7.23 square kilometers, have already been transferred to the territorial communities.
Additionally, 2,059 square kilometers of agricultural land have been cleared of explosive ordnance.
“Following the initial non-technical survey of areas affected by explosive ordnance, the total area has decreased from 156,000 square kilometers to 142,000 square kilometers,” stated Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk.
- On July 1, it was reported that over 144,000 square kilometers in Ukraine remain potentially mined as a result of a full-scale Russian invasion.
