Starmer and Zelenskyy discuss strengthening UK training for Ukrainian forces
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have emphasized the need to refine UK-led training for Ukrainian forces to strengthen their defense capabilities
BBC reported the information.
During a call on Monday, Starmer assured Zelenskyy that Western allies remain “united in their determination to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position going into 2025.”
This discussion comes as the Ministry of Defense considers sending British troops to Ukraine to support training efforts, building on the UK's existing programs. Since 2022, Britain has trained over 45,000 Ukrainian personnel on British soil through Operation Interflex, with a small team of British medics also providing training inside Ukraine.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of refining the UK’s offer to bolster Ukraine’s ability on the battlefield, a No 10 spokeswoman said. They also stressed that “what happens in Ukraine in the coming weeks and months matters to Europe and NATO.”
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude on social media, thanking Starmer and the British people “for their unwavering support that continues to save Ukrainian lives.”
The call followed Starmer’s participation in the Joint Expeditionary Force summit in Estonia, where leaders from 10 nations, including the UK and Nordic countries, discussed support for Ukraine. The group highlighted the need for “concrete action,” such as tightening sanctions on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil-exporting ships and accelerating military aid.
