Japanese Prime Minister Kishida to meet with Zelenskyy in United States
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will hold a separate meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his last foreign trip to the United States as head of the Japanese government
NHK reports.
It is noted that the Japanese Prime Minister will leave for the United States on September 21. During the four-day tour, he will take part in a series of talks aimed at strengthening ties with Washington and other strategic partners of the country.
“Kishida will also meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is scheduled to be stateside at the same time. He is expected to convey Japan's intention to maintain support for Kyiv, and sanctions against Russia,” the publication notes.
During Kishida's visit to the United States, he is also scheduled to hold one-on-one talks with U.S. President Joe Biden and participate in the QUAD leaders' summit, a quadripartite security dialogue involving Japan, the United States, Australia, and India. The four heads of state are expected to agree to strengthen cooperation on maritime security amid China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Japanese prime minister will also take part in the Summit of the Future at the UN General Assembly in New York. There, he plans to call for UN reform. In addition, Kishida intends to emphasize the importance of a rules-based international order and will contribute to efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons, the publication adds.
