U.S. sends Putin bold signal
Trump begins his PR game, and the first public "sacrifice" is Ukraine's NATO prospects
In fact, topics that were the subject of indirect contacts between Ukrainian, American, and Russian representatives are now surfacing.
By calling Biden's promise of Ukraine's NATO membership a mistake, Trump essentially signals that he is willing to sacrifice the first trump card—Ukraine's membership in the Alliance. He adds that he understands "Russia's feelings." "A big problem for Russia is Ukraine being part of NATO."
"Biden is criticized for the Ukraine-Russia deal not materializing because of Biden's position that Ukraine should become a member of the Alliance."
This is unlikely to align with reality, but for Trump, the contrast with Biden is important, and over the next year, he will repeat this thousands of times.
However, the fact that the NATO issue for Ukraine is effectively being removed from the agenda, without even reaching direct negotiations with Russia, speaks of one thing: the U.S. is ready for "serious" bargaining and is sending Putin a bold and generous signal about the need to sit down at the negotiating table.
