Is Belarus building up its military presence on Ukrainian border? Lawmaker explains
Roman Kostenko, member of Ukraine's Defense Committee, addressed reports claiming that Belarus may be ramping up its military presence along the Ukrainian border
He made this statement on January 8, according to Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko.
According to Kostenko, Ukraine continuously monitors the situation on the border with Belarus.
"Although Belarus is not currently participating in the war against us on a full scale, we understand that this is still 1,080 kilometers of hostile border because the enemy attacked us from this direction," the MP said.
At the same time, he noted that there is currently no information about an increased military presence near the border with Ukraine.
"Regarding the information that the regime there may or may not have changed, we do not currently have such information. I believe we will soon have a closed committee meeting, where intelligence representatives will be present, and we will ask them for this information," Kostenko explained.
- On January 7, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had allegedly been ordered to drag Belarus into the war.
- On the same day, the monitoring group Belarusian Hajun reported that Belarus had increased its military presence near the border with Ukraine. However, the Center for Countering Disinformation stated there was no threat of an invasion. "As of now, there is no threat of an invasion by regular Belarusian troops. Information from certain channels about the buildup of Belarusian forces on the other side of the border does not mean the creation of strike groups or preparation for offensive actions," said Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council.
- On January 8, media reported that Belarus began training territorial troops in the Gomel region, which borders the Chernihiv region.
