Russian soldiers execute two Ukrainian POWs in Kursk region: Prosecutor General's Office launches investigation
Russian troops executed two captured Ukrainian soldiers at close range in the Kursk region. Ukraine has reached out to international organizations for action on this war crime
This was reported by Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets.
"According to information circulating online, Russian forces likely shot at least two unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war at close range in the Kursk region," the report states.
The Ombudsman stressed that prisoners of war must be protected, particularly from violence. Instead, Russia has once again committed a war crime — a serious breach of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law.
Lubinets added that he has already sent letters to the United Nations (UN) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding this crime.
"The international community must respond immediately to this act of cruelty to stop Russia's aggression! How many more lives have to be lost for the world to act? Russia must be held accountable for every crime and every shattered life," the Human Rights Commissioner declared.
Prosecutor General's Office launches investigation
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has opened an investigation into the violation of wartime laws and customs, as well as intentional murder (under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
“Intentionally killing prisoners of war is a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions and is considered a grave international crime,” prosecutors stated.
- Recently, on November 9, reports surfaced of another Russian war crime: Russian troops allegedly shot and killed an unarmed, wounded Ukrainian soldier.
