Ukraine proposes storing American gas in its facilities
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, stated that Ukraine is offering the United States its underground gas storage facilities. Kyiv also invites American businesses to participate in the reconstruction efforts
He made this statement at a press conference with the UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, who was in Kyiv on a working visit on February 5.
Sybiha commented on the U.S. interest in Ukraine's rare earth metals and other natural resources. He reminded that in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Victory Plan, there was also a point regarding opportunities for foreign partners to jointly develop and invest in the natural resources that Ukraine is rich in. The diplomat described this as a shared strategic interest that would guarantee the presence of large businesses in Ukraine.
At the same time, Sybiha emphasized that the scope of shared interests and mutually beneficial cooperation is not limited to just these resources.
"For example, we see huge potential, especially after the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, in the possibility of purchasing LNG gas from the United States. You know that Ukraine has extremely powerful underground gas storage facilities, and here too we have shared points for mutually beneficial cooperation, while simultaneously strengthening Europe's energy security. Because this gas will be sufficient, if injected into our storage facilities, for Ukraine to play the role of a guarantor of energy security in Europe," said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Access to rare earth metal deposits is a matter of the relatively distant future, while military aid is needed by Ukraine today, making this exchange quite beneficial.
