Russia has turned Mariupol into a city of nameless graves, Ukraine’s ombudsman says
The Commissioner for Human Rights told about the mass burials of civilians in the Russian-occupied Mariupol, which is almost destroyed by the invading forces
This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.
“The mass grave at the Old Crimea cemetery continues to increase. At first, the occupiers buried people there who were mercilessly killed by mass shelling, and now the number of graves is increasing due to the deaths of elderly people who could not leave the city,” Lubinets said.
These burials reportedly have no names, only numbers. The number of bodies in one grave is also unknown.
Lubinets added that there is no search algorithm for relatives of the deceased either.
“Murderers destroy the traces of their own crimes, and never record them. However, after the liberation of Mariupol by our soldiers, we will be able to assess the scale of the criminal acts of the Russian forces, and we will identify and respectfully bury the dead Mariupol residents. And those guilty of these war crimes will bear the strictest and most just responsibility,” the ombudsman noted.
