Biden asked to allow Poland to intercept missiles over Ukraine, Warsaw responds
The U.S. Helsinki Commission has called on the U.S. President Joe Biden to allow Poland to intercept missiles over Ukraine
According to The Hill, the bipartisan leaders of the Commission, Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Steve Cohen, sent a letter to Biden.
In the letter, Wilson and Cohen request “to grant Poland the authority to intercept and neutralize missiles over Ukraine, particularly those threatening to encroach upon Polish airspace.”
“The request is based on a push by Poland to use its air defense shields and possibly extend them, which would defend their skies against Russian missiles but also assist Ukraine in its defense”, the publication noted.
Poland's reaction
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński told Ukrinform on October 31 that Warsaw is hoping for a positive decision from Biden on this issue.
He mentioned that Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has previously expressed his belief that allied forces should intercept Russian missiles heading toward Poland over Ukraine. However, this stance has faced criticism from NATO.
“As we know, NATO countries, the organization itself, and some in the United States have expressed negative views on this initiative. But Minister Sikorski hopes that this position will change,” Wroński said.
- Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski declared that Poland and other neighboring countries have a "constitutional obligation" to intercept Russian missiles before they breach their airspace.
- Later, the Polish Foreign Ministry clarified that Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski’s comments about Warsaw's “constitutional duty” to intercept Russian missiles over Ukraine reflect his personal opinion, not the official stance of the Polish government.
