Poland starts construction of East Shield fortification line on border with Russia
Poland has initiated the construction of a defensive fortification line, known as the East Shield, along its border with Russia
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the information.
The "East Shield" project involves the construction of new fortifications, fences, terrain modifications, and specially designed forests along the 400-kilometer land border.
A total of 10 billion zlotys (approximately $2.5 billion) has been allocated to enhance the borders with Russia and Belarus to deter potential aggression.
“We want our border to be secure in time of peace and impassable in time of war,” Donald Tusk said in May this year.
Babel says Poland is not the only country that is strengthening its borders. For example, in January of this year, the Estonian Ministry of Defense announced that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania would create a joint defense line on the border with Russia, to “deter and, if necessary, defend against a military threat.”
In August, Lithuania began construction of a military base near the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and 20 kilometers from the border with Russiaʼs ally Belarus.
