Olha Skrypnyk, Head of the Board of the Crimean Human Rights Group, noted that the number of political prisoners and civilian hostages in Crimea is constantly growing

She told about this on Espreso TV.

"As for Crimea, on the one hand, it is not always in the top news topics, because there are other problems that are now related to the war. But at the same time, all processes related to Crimea continue. It is important that there has been a decisive change in the view that Crimea can and should be returned by military means. However, there is not enough attention to our prisoners, civilian hostages, this applies to both the occupied territories after 2022 and those that were occupied even earlier. The number of prisoners is growing, but we currently have no mechanisms for the release of civilian prisoners, including political prisoners of Crimea. In my opinion, there is definitely not enough attention to this at the international level," the Head of the Board of the Crimean Human Rights Group stressed.

According to her, there are a lot of people behind bars today, only 180 people have confirmed criminal materials, but no one can say the exact number, because some prisoners are in Russia. But to them are added those who are abducted by the Russian Federation in the south from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and transported to the occupied Crimea. These are hundreds of people who are constantly being moved and then taken to the Russian Federation.

"The number of prisoners is constantly growing, which is confirmed by the fact that the occupation authorities have opened three pre-trial detention centres in Simferopol. Let me remind you that until 2022, there was only one pre-trial detention centre there, where political prisoners were held. The condition of the people is terrible, they are usually victims of torture, Russia literally beats the testimony out of them. Also, these people do not receive medical care, and some of them need immediate medical attention because they could really die. So the situation is only getting worse. Usually, the prisoners are then taken very far from Crimea to the northern regions of the Russian Federation, where the cold is added to all the other problems. And there is a separate tendency for Ukrainian citizens who are taken to Russian colonies, many are still in the punishment isolation ward, where additional abuse takes place," said Skrypnyk.

Skrypnyk added that in addition to physical torture, psychological abuse of our citizens is also taking place, and this is compounded by the extremely negative attitude of the criminals in Russian colonies.

  • Earlier, Atesh guerrilla movement learned that the Russia was planning to transfer political prisoners from the temporarily occupied Crimea to Russia.
  • Also, the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre (CTRC) reported that a total of 305 political prisoners and those prosecuted in criminal cases during the occupation of Crimea were recorded, 205 of them were representatives of the Crimean Tatar people
