What did the G-20 summit in Brazil mean for Ukraine?

The G-20 summit in Brazil, focused on key issues compared to last year’s meetings, mentioned Ukraine only briefly without condemning the war, signaling that no major moves have been made

This was stated by the author of the Resurgam Telegram channel.

According to him, there was a risk that Brazil and China would use the summit to push a hybrid approach to Ukraine’s surrender. So far, there have been no signs of this.

“I haven’t seen any major signs at the summit that would strategically change the situation, aside from a few minor remarks in the communiqué and some statements that are not critical at their core,” Resurgam stated.

He also noted that the risk was heightened by the fact that Xi Jinping arrived a day before the summit to hold talks with Brazilian President Lula. There's a theory that Biden and some members of his administration also flew early for a reason, which may have constrained Lula in his negotiations with Xi.

According to Resurgam, one of the main topics discussed between Xi Jinping and Lula da Silva before the G-20 summit wasn’t a “Chinese peace plan for Ukraine” or “coordinating actions,” but Elon Musk.

“As for the summit, the G-20 in Brazil was the least focused on important issues and cooperation compared to last year’s summits. And in a way, that’s good for Ukraine. The fact that Ukraine was mentioned only once, and without a direct condemnation of the war, doesn’t really change much. What matters more are the actions taken, not the wording of the communiqué. It’s a positive sign that Ukraine's opponents haven’t made any major moves at the summit yet — or at least, we haven’t seen any,” the Resurgam Telegram channel concluded.

  • On October 18, Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced he would skip the summit in Brazil on November 18–19, where he could get arrested under the International Criminal Court’s warrant. Putin claimed he didn’t want to “cause disruptions” at the event.
