Ukraine's fiber-optic drones pass testing phase
Ukrainian fiber-optic drones are now actively undergoing codification, which will pave the way for mass production. Оne stage of testing for these drones has been successfully completed, clearing the way for government orders
As reported by Defense Express, the fiber optics in these FPV (first-person view) drones allow them to operate without being affected by electronic warfare.
Several drone models are in development, with one called the Black Widow Web 10 already passing the codification process and receiving a NATO code for “a whole line of UAV solutions.” The Black Widow drone can fly up to 5 km and carry a warhead weighing up to 2 kg.
Earlier in September, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Black Widow drone had been codified and approved for use by the military. Described as reusable and effective both day and night, it is particularly useful as a "bomber," though it can also be used as a kamikaze drone if needed.
“Meanwhile, Russia began using fiber-optic drones in the spring of 2024 and has since ramped up their production, successfully employing them on the battlefield. Unfortunately, Ukraine has not given this technology the attention it deserves, though it remains a debated topic - whether such drones are a temporary solution, a dead-end, or a significant technological advancement. Russia, with its vast resources, is able to invest in various projects, knowing that while many will fail, some will succeed,” Defense Express notes.
