Wallace's statement about Ukraine's lack of gratitude "unfortunate misunderstanding," Ukraine's top diplomat says
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has responded to a statement by UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace about the lack of gratitude from Ukrainians and called it an "unfortunate misunderstanding"
He said this on the air of the United News telethon.
"I think it was an unfortunate misunderstanding on the part of British Minister Wallace. In fact, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak denied the words of his minister and publicly said that he appreciated Ukraine's gratitude, which is regularly voiced in various formats," Kuleba said.
He also stressed that no one has any reason to accuse Ukraine of ingratitude.
"But the truth is that, sorry, we are at war. And when my colleagues, ministers, and foreign journalists often ask me: have you received enough weapons? I say that weapons will not be enough for as long as our path to victory lasts. When we win, then I will say: thank you, there were enough weapons. But as long as the struggle continues, there are not enough weapons," the Ukrainian Foreign Minister said.
According to the minister, he does not feel that any of his allies do not appreciate Ukraine's gratitude or lack thereof.
Kuleba also said that at the NATO summit in Vilnius, the Ukrainian delegation sat next to the British one. At the same time, the defence ministers agreed on an important military decision on weapons, which Wallace agreed to.
"All decisions continue to be made as they should be. And the fact that someone there doesn't consider themselves Amazon... We don't mind if they become Amazon. Let them just remain a large open warehouse of British weapons for Ukraine. We are very grateful to everyone: the country that gave us one shell and the country that gave us a hundred thousand shells. We are grateful to all of them," the Ukrainian Foreign Minister added.
What British defence minister Wallace said
On 12 July, British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace commented on Volodymyr Zelenskyy's outrage that NATO had not invited Ukraine. He stated that his country is not an Amazon online store, so it cannot provide Ukraine with all the necessary weapons from its stocks.
The British Defence Secretary believes that Ukraine should be more grateful to the West for its assistance in the war with Russia.
"Whether we like it or not, people want to see a bit of gratitude. Sometimes you’re persuading countries to give up their own stocks. Sometimes you’ve got to persuade lawmakers on the Hill in America," Wallace said.
At a briefing in Vilnius, he also told how he came to Ukraine last year to get a list of necessary weapons.
"I told them that last year, when I drove 11 hours to be given a list, that I’m not like Amazon," the British Defence Secretary said.
At the same time, the Defence Secretary understands that Zelenskyy was addressing his audience. Wallace added that the final summit agreement "is good for Ukraine".
