Ex-FBI informant, who falsely claimed Biden took Ukrainian bribe, sentenced to 6 years
Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who admitted to lying about U.S. President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden's ties to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, has been sentenced to six years in prison
Reuters reported the information.
Last month, Alexander Smirnov admitted to providing the FBI with false testimony, claiming he knew about a $5 million bribe to the Bidens from Burisma Holdings officials, where Hunter Biden served on the board.
Additionally, Smirnov pleaded guilty to tax evasion.
“The defendant decided in 2020 to exploit the position of trust he enjoyed with the FBI in order to provide false information about one of the candidates for President of the United States in an attempt to influence the outcome of the election,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing, referring to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.
Smirnov’s lawyers sought a four-year prison sentence, arguing that he had taken responsibility and suffered "personal downfall" as a result of the case. However, the court granted the prosecutors' request for a six-year prison term.
- In February 2024, former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov was accused of lying about the role of U.S. President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in Ukrainian business.
