Ukraine demands Russia provides corridor to evacuate women and children from land near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant - Vereshchuk
Many people are turning to the Ukrainian government for help - they are trying to leave the dangerous territory.
Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, stated this during a conversation with journalists on the French TV channel LCI.
"The situation around the largest nuclear power plant in Europe continues to be tense due to constant shelling by the Russian army. In particular, today's shelling provoked a fire and the disconnection of its last power unit from the network. Peaceful citizens from the surrounding settlements want to evacuate as soon as possible," Iryna Vereshchuk said.
"People are turning to us en masse for help - they are trying to leave the dangerous territory. We once again appeal to the Russian Federation with the demand to provide us with a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of women, children, and the elderly!" said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Vereshchuk stated that Russia officially refuses to provide such corridors.
However, Ukraine will not stop trying to help its citizens leave for safe places, Iryna Vereshchuk emphasized.
