The European Parliament voted to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership

The European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it supported the proposal to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. The decision was made at an extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday, March 1.
676 European deputies took part in the voting, of which 637 voted in favor, 13 against, 26 abstained.
"The European Parliament calls on the EU institutions to work towards granting Ukraine candidate status for the EU, in accordance with Article 49 of the EU Treaty on the basis of merit, and in the meantime continue to work towards its integration into the EU internal market in accordance with the Association Agreement", the resolution states.
The document also strongly condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine and demands that Moscow immediately withdraw its troops from the country.
